Office for Research into Chemical Substances and Eco-toxicological Risks

Mission:

To develop research that informs decision-making on the prevention and reduction of environmental risks through exposure to insecticides and toxic substances, which at the same time promotes the safe, environmental management of hazardous materials and waste. This to be accomplished through the informed, responsible and committed participation of all sectors of society whom benefit directly or indirectly from the use of such materials as a source of technological development, income and employment.

Specific Objectives:

• Disseminate information about the environmentally sound management of chemical substances.
• Provide the different areas of SEMARNAT with scientific and technical information about chemical substances, which will aid their decision-making.
• Make use of cooperation and financing opportunities, and maintain an active and effective presence in the international arena and context.
• Participate in the design and implementation of the research activities that pertain to the Regional Action Plans of the North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation.
• Participate in the implementation of monitoring and environmental evaluation strategies.
• Develop inventories on insecticides and toxic substances.
• Develop research strategies on risk communication.
