What is CENICA?
The National Environmental Research and Training Center (CENICA), which opened on November 25, 1997, is the result of cooperation between the governments of Mexico and Japan, and the National Institute of Ecology (INE), the Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The Center is committed to promoting and carrying out experimental research in the fields of: atmospheric contamination, waste, toxic substances, contaminated sites and transgenics; provision of technical specifications, design bases, operating protocols, data management for atmospheric monitoring systems; evaluation of atmospheric monitoring systems; promotion, coordination and supervision with regards the establishment of atmospheric contamination monitoring systems in federal entities; capacity-building among functionaries and technicians working at all three levels of government; and, active participation in forums and research projects both at a national and international level, in order to maintain the Center’s role as a reliable referencing source of scientific information.
Solving environmental problems, protecting natural resources, and guaranteeing a healthy environment for sustainable development, are challenges that continually spur us on to redouble our research and data collection efforts.
